1What is this?

Devata is a self-serve Vedic astrology (Jyotiṣa) reading service from AyurAstro. You enter a birth date, time, and place; a precise astronomical engine casts the chart; and a reading is composed only from the classical Sanskrit texts — every statement traceable to the verse it came from. You receive it as a PDF.

It is an academic exploration of how the tradition reads a chart — a window into the texts, not a prophecy.

2Why are my placements (Sun sign, etc.) different here?

Because Devata reads your chart in the sidereal zodiac of Jyotiṣa, not the tropical zodiac most Western astrology uses. The tropical zodiac pins 0° Aries to the spring equinox; the sidereal zodiac keeps the signs aligned to the actual fixed stars behind them.

Over the centuries the two frames have slowly drifted apart — by roughly 24° today, a gap called the ayanāṃśa. The practical effect is that most placements shift back about one sign: a late-Leo Sun in a Western chart is usually a Cancer Sun here. This isn't an error — it's the older, star-based system the classical texts were written in.

Devata uses the Lahiri (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṃśa with Whole-Sign houses — the standard convention in modern classical Jyotiṣa.

3Does this replace a reading with a real, live, human astrologer?

No — and it isn't meant to. Devata does the precise, tedious part flawlessly: the astronomy, the text-lookup, the cross-referencing across thousands of verses. But it has no intuition, no compassion, and cannot read the living thread of your life or answer back.
